HCI (although recently taken over by the German Stinnes Group) is a leading company in the distribution of chemicals. HCI is the market leader in South America and has been active in that region for nearly 40 years. It can best be typified as a flat organization with high competences and responsibilities for all managers, resulting in a “hands on” environment. During the 3 years I worked with HCI in Venezuela, I was employed in the following functions:

1. Management Trainee: Mainly sales oriented, in combination with some short projects (software, logistics and ISO-9000 certification)
2. District Manager Caracas: fully responsible for a profit center covering the Caracas area (turnover approximately 450.000 $/month, 12 employees, warehouse, administration, billing, collecting, budgets etc.). Furthermore I was involved in the development of a tailor made software program and a thorough reorganization of the company on national level, in which we turned the company from a region oriented organization into an industry oriented organization.
3. Industry Manager: responsible for the national sales in the Personal Care & Food Industry in Venezuela with a turnover of approximately 780.000 $ per month. Key responsibilities: purchase of the typical products for this industry, initiating and maintaining contacts with suppliers (national en international), managing a sales team, sales prognoses, presentation of results, negotiating with key clients, introduction of new products.



1999-2000 Theeuwes Groep

The Theeuwes Groep is a 100 year old family owned company with businesses in several countries. Their core business is grains. In Merida, Yucatan, Mexico they have a 50 % stake in NIMEX. I was sent to Mexico and worked as the general manager of NIMEX, responsible for all aspects of the business: e.g. informing the shareholders, purchase, managing the representatives, administration.

Main activities: grain trading and initiating new business in the agricultural sector. I investigated the possibilities for shrimp, tropical fruits, honey, fish-meal, orange juice concentrates, herbs, soybeans and several other products. While investigating those products I had to work my way around in several governmental organizations that are involved in Mexican agriculture.

2000 Nedcargo

Nedcargo is a “dot-com” that was founded in June 2000 as a neutral market-place for international transportation and logistics. My job as business development director consisted of setting up the Rotterdam and Antwerp offices, and initiating a network of customers.

2001-present EcoDeco

EcoDeco is a start-up company dedicated to ecological bio-technology by focusing on the growing of aquatic organisms (mainly invertebrates) that might be of interest for the pharmaceutical industry. In march of 2001 I was asked by a friend to take care of those aspects of setting up a business he didn’t feel comfortable about. I was paid in shares.

Within EcoDeco it was my responsibility to set up the juridical infrastructure, take care of the subsidy-enquiries, make several parts of the business plan and prepare propositions to potential investors. EcoDeco will enter the research and development stage in June 2002 and from then on my involvement won’t be needed anymore.
